Marion Barber (RB) - Dallas Cowboys

The change in coaching in Dallas will breed new changes in the Dallas offensive system, and Barber is the one that will suffer most. Dallas will likely transition into a feature back system that new head coach Philips was so familiar with back in San Diego. Unfortunately for Barber, he is just not feature back material.

The Bust Explained

Barber doesn’t have the break-away speed that is necessary to be an every down back. This is proven in the fact that his longest carry over his NFL career is only 28yards. While he really has a knack for getting into the end-zone, those days are long gone. Parcells loves big, tough, running backs, and it was the only reason Barber was given so much opportunity in Dallas over the past two years. But Parcells reign of terror is over, and Barber will be left without a place in Dallas.

Along with some changes in the backfield, it’s already being rumored that Dallas plans to utilize their tight end more frequently in the red zone. This isn’t a surprise considering the success Philips had in San Diego with their tight end (Gates). For this same reason, we almost considered Jason Witten as a MoSneaky. These new plans to utilize the tight end in the red zone is just more reason to believe that even Barbers talents on the goal-line won’t be needed any more.

The Risk Factor:

New coaches bring along a large amount of uncertainty. There’s always a chance Jones could stray in the off-season, impregnate Wade Phillip’s 13 year old daughter, and forever be in his dog-house. Coaches are fickle like that. But in this instance, the reward far outweighs the risk. Dallas has a history of star feature backs, and Jones could easily pickup that role starting next year.

The Strategy:

Avoid at all costs. If you have him as a keeper, consider trading him for draft picks (and then select Julius Jones).
