MoSneaky - Tatum Bell (DET)
Tatum Bell (RB) - Detroit Lions
Tatum Bell is like a box of chocolates. Even retarded guys at the bus stop talk about how inconsistent he is. One game Bell will look explosive and exciting, the next you’ll see guys dragging him down with one arm in the backfield (when he’s not fumbling). “If he couldn’t produce consistently in Denver, how can you expect him to do so in Detroit?” would be a good question to ask at this juncture.
The Break Out Explained
Tatum Bell can be very explosive at times. We’re talking Busch-Light-day-after-diarrhea type explosive here. We like that. There’s really no threat from anyone on the roster to overtake him for the starting spot. He WILL get most of the carries. Another thing we really like, is that Martz offense features the RB as a pass-catcher. Kevin Jones caught 61 balls last year, for over 500 yards and a couple scores, making his lackluster rushing totals a little easier to swallow. We like the idea of Bell getting dump passes out in the flat, where he has some space to make moves. Running the ball, he can’t be any worse than Jones was last year (a miserable 3.8 ypc). Jones still managed almost 700 yards in 12 games. A 1000 yard season is within the realm of possiblities, should Bell stay healthy.
The Risk Factor:
There are some risks here, for certain. Bell’s inconsistancy is not the least of those. However, the real unkown in this equation is Kevin Jones. How bad is his injury. Early reports have him doing very light jogging. Reports range from being back in time for training camp, to being out the entire year. Our guess is that he’ll miss several games early on. He’ll probably be ready by midseason. That will give Bell plenty of time to solidify the job.
The Strategy:
Mike Martz isn’t going to turn Tatum Bell into the next Marshall Faulk. Don’t get your hopes that high. But, if you can snag Bell in the 7th or 8th round of a 12 team draft, you have the potential for a very nice pickup. We’re going to say 800 combined yards, and maybe 5 TDs in the first half of the season. You can trade him before Jones gets back.
