Every year, we wonder just who is going to be the man getting all the carries in Carolina. This year will be no different. With a year under his belt, Williams looks to up his workload. Incumbent starter, Deshaun Foster will try to hang onto the job. Nick Goings, the waiver wire hero of two years ago, is waiting for these guys to get hurt. Fullback Brad Hoover and forgotten man Eric Shelton wonder who is going to get the goalline carries. Sounds like a mess, yeah?

The Break Out Explained We like Williams exlosiveness. That right there guarantees that the coaches will want to get the ball into his hands. He got about 1/3 of the carries last year, and we don’t expect that ratio to go down at all. Even if Williams doesn’t win the job outright, Foster is one of the most injury prone backs in the league. So it’s not a stretch to think Williams will end up getting a LOT of carries. If one guy were to get all the carries in Carolina, you’d be looking at a 1400yard and 8-10 TD season. That’s a pretty nice upside. Also keep in mind that most of Williams’ stats came in the 2nd half of the season last year, after the coaches started getting him more involved.

The Risk Factor: The biggest knock on Williams has to be his size. He’s on the smallish side, but don’t let that completely dissuade you. We could rattle off a list of guys like Barry Sanders and LaDanian Tomlinson, guys who aren’t exceptionally large but had a ton of success running the football, but we’ll suffice it to say that Williams is big enough to handle the majority of the workload. It’s possible that Williams won’t rise out of the clusterfuck which is the Panther’s backfield and become a legitimate fantasy starter. However, it’s exactly that kind of thinking that will make him slide way down the draft board.

The Strategy:

Williams will likely go into camp as the #2 back, behind Deshaun Foster. View that as a good thing. Williams stock will plummet on draft day. You should be able to pick him up in the mid-rounds of your draft. If you can pick him up later than round 6, there’s a good chance you got a steal.
