Julius Jones (RB) - Dallas Cowboys
The arrival of new coach Wade Philips (not to be confused with Emo Philips) is going to be cause for some big changes in Dallas this year. Along with a vast history of coaching that spans back to the mid-70’s, Wade was most recently the defensive coordinator for San Diego. We’d be very surprised if he didn’t pick up a thing a two from Marty Schoettehimer over the past few years. While it won’t completely be Marty-Ball in Dallas this season, there will be some very obvious similarities.
The Break Out Explained
If there is one thing that we expect the virginal Dallas coach to carry over from his Charger days, it is a feature back system. While Marion Barber showed a real talent for getting into the end zone over the last two seasons, he’s proven to be incapable of being an every down back. Julius Jones on the other hand definitely has that ability. Parcells never knew how to utilize Julius, as he was used to having a big horse-dicked back that pounds it up the middle. “I think maybe I was being told where to run and not really able to use my instincts, and that’s what got me here,” Jones told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Julius then went on to explain how Philips is changing the offensive system to allow him more freedom in his rushing.
The Risk Factor:
New coaches bring along a large amount of uncertainty. There’s always a chance Jones could stray in the off-season, bang Wade Philips 13 year old daughter, and forever be in his dog-house. Coaches are fickle like that. But in this instance, the reward far outweighs the risk. Dallas has a history of star feature backs, and Jones could easily pickup that role starting next year.
The Strategy:
Don’t try to take the Barber/Jones combo. The days of that annoying tandem are over. If you are in a TD only league, Barber will likely be the first back taken. Be patient, wait for Marion to be selected, and swoop in and claim Jones as early as possible.
